Aparna Asthana is a Houston resident with an interest in women and children's issues, both locally and in India. She taught ESL (English as a Second Language) classes at a Dallas area community centre for several years, working predominantly with refugees and immigrants. In Houston she has been a court appointed Child Advocate for children in the foster care system who have experienced abuse and neglect. She advocated for the best interests of the children on her cases and made recommendations to the courts and Child Protective Services in finding stability for these children. She is also involved in outreach and volunteer efforts with other area non-profits.
In 2015 she and her husband Manu Asthana became Dasra Giving Circle members on the Adolescent Girl Nutrition project.
